The LIMES Communities of Practice

Communities of Practice

Community of Practice for Research Methods
Community of Practice for Cataloguing and Indexing
Community of Practice for Information Literacy

The concept of a community of practice grew out of the aim of the LIMES project to foster networks of LIS academics to maintain the currency of the teaching materials, which ultimately will be added to the Higher Education Academy's learning and teaching resources. A survey of academics to gauge interest in the materials and their ongoing development revealed that there was most interest in communities of practice in Cataloguing and Indexing, Research Methods and Information Literacy.

The LIMES project has hosted events to facilitate communities of practice in these three areas. (please see individual pages for further information). The primary aim of each event was to bring together academics teaching in these areas to share 'best practice' and to enhance the provision of teaching materials. Where appropriate, practitioners were invited to contribute their experience and knowledge. A Community of Practice is a group of peers who are connected to one another by a common sense of purpose, most usually by their profession or their role or special interest. Through their joint problem solving, new knowledge is developed.
