Jan 2004 - Volume 3 Issue 1

Editorial by Alan Poulter

Welcome to the first issue of a re-launched ITALICS! We are going quarterly, and, as a consequence of this, editorials (not this one alas) will be more than just a summary of the papers in the journal issue. Journals need to develop a special character, a viewpoint on, a relationship with, the topic they cover, and an essential element of this character building are editorials. In future, editorials (certainly from me, and hopefully from themed-issue special editors) will take a stance on educational issues in the information and computer science domain. That stance might be related to one or more of the papers in the issue. It might be related to something the editor has encountered at the ‘chalk-face’, at a conference, on a course etc. It might be on something seemingly unrelated that can be explored for implications. Whatever the inspiration, editorials will hopefully be thought-provoking, worthwhile reading.

I for one would welcome feedback on future editorials. If anyone out there has suggestions for topics for editorials, please let me know. So watch out for the next issue and its editorial.
