This section compares some currently available plagiarism detection tools that were made available for us to test. These comparisons are not intended to be an exhaustive review of all available software, nor do they claim that these are the ‘best’ tools for any given situation. However, we have tried to identify the key features, strengths and weaknesses of these software packages sufficient to enable a choice of tools.
Using a dataset of Java source-code files, we demonstrate and evaluate four popular tools — CodeMatch , CPD , JPlag and Sherlock — that the academic can use for detecting similarities in source-code files. We aim to show how easy it is to use the tool to do the comparison, and how easy it is for academic to interpret the results and pick out the suspicious files. We provide comparisons of those source-code tools based on their features and on their performance when presented with various strategies used to hide attempted source-code plagiarism.
We also compare three free-text tools — CopyCatch Gold, Sherlock and VAST/PRAISE.
